How To Add Domain Aliases or Secondary Domains On WPAlpha

Domain aliases, also called secondary domains, let extra domain names point at your main website. A common use is redirecting a misspelt or alternative version of your domain to your main site. Depending on your plan you may have one WordPress site or several, but every plan lets you add secondary domains.

In this video, we walk you through setting up secondary domains or “domain aliases” in your WP Alpha account. From about the 2 minute mark it also shows how to remove them.

Step by step: adding a domain alias

  1. Log in to the hosting admin console and go to Websites & Domains.
  2. Click Add Domain Alias.
  3. Enter the secondary domain, for example a common misspelling of your main domain.
  4. Leave the mail service off, keep the web service on and turn on the redirect option, so the alias forwards visitors to your main domain.
  5. Click OK. You can follow the progress in the bottom right corner of the console.
  6. When it finishes, the alias appears in your domain list and redirects automatically.
  7. Give the alias an SSL certificate. Open the alias’s dashboard (it only has a few options, because it is a secondary domain rather than a full website). If it shows as not secured, click through, choose to reissue the certificate and follow the prompts to install it.

Step by step: removing a domain alias

  1. Go back to Websites & Domains, where your list of domains is shown.
  2. Click the three dots next to the alias.
  3. Choose Remove Domain Alias. It takes a second or two.

The same menu has an option to change the alias, for example if you made a typo. It is usually better to remove the alias and add a new one instead of changing it.

Things to check

  • If the domain runs through Cloudflare, you may see a warning with a “resolve problems” link after adding the alias. In the video this was safe to ignore, because the domain sits behind Cloudflare.
  • If the redirect is already handled at Cloudflare, you may not need to issue a certificate for the alias on the hosting.
  • Check the spelling of the domain before you click OK. Fixing a typo later means removing the alias and adding it again.
